People will forever be forced to go through Steam directly to get it. This means that if you upload a thing to the Steam Workshop (and not to other places), people will never be able to freely share this thing with each other again. The Steam Subscriber Agreement states that any file uploaded to the Workshop becomes a licensed item. Why can you not share mods that people made and uploaded for free!? At this point the site is no longer a creative outlet but a legal liability. We reached out on Steam support and they told us to stop distributing content. However, since the events of last week, we realized that all this time, we did not properly factor in the legal implications. Some people own a game on another platform and wanted mods, some want to inspect mods, some want to control when their mods update, some wanted to change their mods, et cetera. This was fun for a while because it was a new technical challenge to solve and we could help more people. The site got more popular in the last year. We tried to address every feature request that we got. This is why the site worked so well, we kind-of obsessed about all the little technical details. People happened to find out that it somewhat worked for other games too and asked for improvements on that front, which we made over time as a side project because it gave us a reason to rewrite the site using new technologies and learn from it in the process. How did it come to this?įor many years the site was just a simple tool for server owners to easily extract workshop mods for 1 game, in order to check them for maliciousness and manage them manually on their server. This site was maintained by hobbyists and dealing with legal is not part of the hobby. We are not interested in the consequences of non-compliance.
Valve has requested that we stop retrieving and redistributing content. We will no longer serve any files through our network. At this point the site has become untenable. Unfortunately its status as a small niche tool faded in the process. The site has gained a lot of popularity in the last year.
